Whipsaw

Trading involves risk. You could lose more than your deposit.

A whipsaw is a sharp move that reverses almost immediately, so an entry taken on the first leg is undone by the second and stops can be triggered on both sides in quick succession.

A description of an outcome rather than of a formation, borrowed from the saw that is pulled back and forth by two people. Price leaves a level convincingly, positions are opened and stops are triggered on the way, and then it returns through the level and does the same in the other direction. Nothing on the chart marks a whipsaw while it is happening: the same bars are an ordinary breakout until the reversal arrives, which is why the word is always applied backwards.

Conditions of this kind cluster in identifiable places: thin sessions between the main trading centres, the minutes around a scheduled release, round numbers and widely watched levels where resting orders accumulate, and narrow ranges whose width is not much greater than the cost of entering them. Frequency also depends on what is reading the market, not only on the market. A method that acts on every crossing of a moving average registers many more reversals inside a range than one that requires a close beyond a level, or a return to it that holds, before treating the level as broken.

The cost is the part that surprises. A whipsaw is rarely one loss: it is a short sequence of them, and each turn pays the spread and any commission again, so a stretch of them costs more than the distance travelled suggests, and a stop filled in fast conditions can fill some way from its level. The remedies are genuinely disputed, and the dispute is honest rather than unresolved detail: a confirmation filter delays entry and therefore gives up part of any move it does catch, while a wider stop reduces how often the level is touched and increases the amount at stake when it is. Neither removes the condition, because reversals of this kind are a property of how markets trade rather than a fault in the tool reading them.
