Choppy market

An informal description of conditions in which price crosses back and forth through a narrow band without extending in either direction. Bars overlap heavily, highs and lows fail to progress, and each apparent break of the band returns inside it. The word describes the texture of the tape rather than any measured quantity, and no exchange, regulator or data vendor defines it.

Conditions of this kind cluster in identifiable places: thin sessions between the main trading centres, the days around public holidays, and the hours before a scheduled release when participants stand aside. Traders reach for several rough gauges, among them a narrowing true range measured against its own recent history, a trend strength reading below a conventionally cited threshold, and price crossing a moving average repeatedly in a short span. Each is a convention, and none is a definition.

The trip is that chop is relative to the frame it is viewed on. A session that is directionless on a fifteen minute chart is a single quiet bar on a daily one, and a strong daily trend contains long stretches that are choppy inside the day. Practitioners disagree about whether the condition can be identified in advance at all, since the same bars only become recognisable as chop once the reversals have already happened. What is not disputed is the cost side: methods that pay a spread on every signal incur that cost more often when signals are reversing frequently.
