Breakout
Trading involves risk. You could lose more than your deposit.
A move carrying price beyond a level that had been containing it, such as the edge of a range or a trend line, after which chart traditions treat that level as broken.
A breakout is described whenever price passes a boundary that had been holding it: the high or low of a range, a trend line, the neckline of a pattern, a prior swing point. The boundary is not a property of the market. It is a line somebody drew from previous prices, so a breakout is an event on a chart before it is anything else. What makes the idea durable is that the level is defined in advance, which makes the event checkable rather than a matter of interpretation afterwards.
Because a boundary is a line rather than a wall, traditions attach conditions before a break is called genuine. The common ones are a close beyond the level rather than a touch, a minimum distance beyond it, a rise in volume where volume is available, and a wait for the level to be retested from the other side. Each condition trades one error against the other, since stricter tests reject more false breaks and confirm later while looser tests do the reverse. No setting removes that trade off, and practitioners settle at different points on it.
The failure mode has its own name. A fakeout, or false breakout, is a move beyond the level that reverses back inside it, and these are common precisely because resting instructions cluster just past obvious levels, so a push through them meets executable orders and then no further interest. The related trip-up is a boundary drawn on one time frame and judged on another, since a decisive break on a five minute chart can be an ordinary wick on a daily one.
