Group of Seven (G7)
Trading involves risk. You could lose more than your deposit.
The Group of Seven, or G7, is a forum of advanced economies whose finance ministers and central bank governors meet regularly and whose currencies dominate foreign exchange volume.
Its members are Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, the United Kingdom and the United States, with the European Union attending as a participant. There is no treaty behind it, no secretariat and no power to bind anyone: it issues communiqués. The part that matters to currency markets is its finance track, where finance ministers meet alongside the governors of their central banks.
Statements from that track are read closely because the historical episodes of coordinated central bank intervention in currency markets were agreed in this forum, the Plaza and Louvre accords of the nineteen eighties being the reference cases. The standing language is deliberately bland, holding that excessive volatility and disorderly movements in exchange rates are undesirable. Dealers watch for departures from it, because a communiqué that names a currency or drops a familiar phrase is read as a step towards action rather than as a comment.
The membership is often confused with the other groupings and with the trading categories. The Group of Ten, in its foreign exchange sense, names a wider set of liquid currencies, and the Group of Twenty is a larger forum including major emerging economies. Neither list matches the desk definition of a major currency pair: the Australian dollar and the Swiss franc are majors in dealing terms without their countries being members here, and the euro stands in for several members at once, so counting currencies by counting members does not work.
