Central bank
Trading involves risk. You could lose more than your deposit.
A central bank sets a country's official interest rate and manages its money supply, which makes its scheduled decisions the largest single influence on that currency and its government bonds.
The public institution responsible for a currency and for the conditions under which credit is created in its economy. Its instruments are an official policy rate, operations that add or drain reserves in the banking system, and communication about what it expects to do next. Most operate under a mandate written in law, commonly price stability, sometimes paired with an employment objective, and most are structured to be insulated from day to day political direction.
Decisions are taken by a committee on a calendar published far in advance, and the outcome arrives as a rate decision, a statement, and later minutes and forecasts. Between meetings, money market instruments price what the committee is expected to do, so by the time a decision is announced most of the expected part is already in the price of the currency. That is why a market can move violently on a decision that matched the consensus, if the statement alongside it did not.
Two things get confused. The policy rate is not the rate any household or business pays: it is the rate at which the banking system funds itself, and everything else is priced from it with a margin. And a central bank is not a forecaster whose published path is a promise. Guidance is conditional on the data, committees revise, and practitioners disagree openly about how much weight guidance deserves, precisely because a committee that binds itself too tightly loses the ability to respond.
