Central Bank of the UAE
Trading involves risk. You could lose more than your deposit.
The Central Bank of the UAE is the monetary authority for the dirham, and because the dirham is pegged to the US dollar its policy rate tracks the dollar's rather than being set against domestic conditions.
The central bank of the United Arab Emirates. Its defining feature for anyone reading a screen is the peg: the dirham is fixed against the US dollar, and a fixed rate with free movement of capital leaves no room for an independent policy rate. The institution therefore follows the anchor's decisions, usually within hours and without a committee debating the level, because the response is written into the operating framework it publishes rather than decided case by case.
What that removes and what it leaves are both worth being exact about. It removes the interest rate story from the currency: there is no domestic rate expectation to price, and the pair does not respond to local growth or inflation data the way a floating currency does. It leaves the institution its other functions in full, which include bank supervision, the payment system, reserve management and the liquidity operations that keep local money market rates consistent with the anchor's.
The peg is a policy choice rather than a law of nature, and the institution's ability to hold it rests on reserves and on the receipts that replenish them, which is why the oil price and the region's fiscal position are read as inputs to a currency arrangement that otherwise looks static. Gulf arrangements are also not one system: neighbouring states run pegs of their own with different anchors, bands and histories, so a family resemblance is not an identity.
