Balance of trade
Trading involves risk. You could lose more than your deposit.
The value of a country's exports of goods and services less the value of its imports over the same period, published by its statistics agency on a monthly or quarterly cycle.
The balance of trade is one component of a country's current account. Exports are counted as they leave, imports as they arrive, and the difference is reported in the domestic currency. A positive figure is a surplus and a negative one a deficit, and neither word carries a verdict: a deficit can reflect strong domestic demand as readily as weak competitiveness, which is why economists reading the same release reach opposite conclusions about it.
The link to currencies runs through payments. Buyers of a country's exports have to acquire its currency to settle for them, and its importers sell that currency to pay foreign suppliers, so trade is one persistent source of demand for a currency. Those flows are small beside financial flows in the modern market, which is why an economy running a large and long standing deficit can carry a strong currency for years without contradiction.
Two details trip readers of the release. The headline is usually framed as a change against the previous month, and the previous month is routinely revised, so a surprise measured against a forecast can reverse the following day. And the goods balance and the total balance including services are different numbers for the same country, so a large services exporter can run a goods deficit and a total surplus at once.
How it is calculated
Balance of trade equals the value of exports of goods and services less the value of imports of goods and services over the same period.
